Job Fairs – Your New Recruiting Frontier

By caterinar · Tuesday, November 4th, 2008

As you know, the economy is down and people are losing their jobs. Guess what? That could be the good news for you. The direct selling industry thrives when the economy is down according to one Direct Selling Association study.

People are out there looking for the answer to the question of how they are going to generate more income for their household and you want to help them.

To find them, do what direct sales superstar Dortha Hise does. She goes to job fairs. Why not? This is where the people looking to work are. Last week, at a job fair in a rural community, Dortha signed up 29 new consultants on the spot for her company.

Because the promoter of the event let everyone know which companies would be represented at the event, a few people came specifically to find out about working with her company.

SUCCESS ACTIONS TO TAKE TODAY

Here are a few tips on how to use job fairs as an incredible recruiting opportunity.

• Set up a Google Alert for job+fair+ whatever your geographic area is. This will allow you to get a notification every time a job fair in your area will take place. To find out more about Google Alerts go to http://www.google.com/alerts

When you find a job fair in your area, contact the organizer. Tell them about your opportunity and ask for a booth.

• Find out if there is a cost involved. Often times job fairs are free or there is a nominal fee. Make sure you know what your financial investment is before you commit.

• Ask what is being done ahead of time to promote the event and make sure your company name and logo (if it is okay with your company) will be included in the pre-event promotion.

• Get there early. Set up a booth for recruiting only, not sales or bookings. Bring lots of info packs and sign up sheets.

• Prepare in advance your opening line to engage people in conversation and have them take a look at your company.

• Ask people to sit down with you on the spot to hear about your opportunity and address their questions.

• Have an urgent offer to get them to sign up today.

• Not everyone will be ready to get started immediately, so have your appointment calendar and set up phone appointments to talk to people in the next 48 hours who want to think about it.

• Your fortune is in the follow-up. Make sure you make time for those your follow-up right away to maximize your efforts.

Using job fairs for recruiting has worked well for many innovative direct sellers looking to recruit motivated people. Make this savvy strategy work for you.

I just found this site and I happen to be putting together a local job fair in 2 months so these tips really help make it better than the 1st one I put together!

On the surface I love this idea but I’ve never found a job fair that charges less than $300 for the smallest of booths. It’s the job-seekers that get in free and the promoters make their money from the employers.
