Are You More Sales or More Marketing?
If you are like most direct sellers, you love to do your shows or parties, you love to go out networking and you enjoy doing tradeshows or fairs where you can show people your opportunity or talk to them about your fabulous products.
I want to make sure that you recognize that there is a huge difference between sales and marketing and to have a successful and sustainable direct selling business, you want to have a balance of both.
Marketing activities are those things that you do to get the word out, create exposure, or introduce your product or service to people. Sending out an email newsletter, sending out postcards about a special offer, doing a broadcast email about your hostess special are all marketing activities.
When you follow up with a phone call and ask someone if they saw this month’s special you sent out and would they like to take advantage of this great offer- now that is selling. When you ask someone at an event if they have heard about your company-that is marketing, if you ask them if they would like to hear more about what your company can do for them and you sit down with them to have an opportunity conversation now that is selling.
Selling is asking for the booking, the order, or the sign up sheet. Marketing are all those activities you do to find people to sell to. Make sure you understand the distinction. Marketing activities are a lot easier and sometimes a lot more fun like when you go out networking and meet so many fabulous women. Selling, however, can sometimes make us feel uncomfortable we risk rejection. While not very likely, it is possible someone could laugh at us, or scream at us, what is more likely is that they say yes or no and you get the result you want or you don’t.
I encourage you to evaluate if you are doing more sales or more marketing these days and I want to you to check in with yourself and ask you if you are mostly marketing. While marketing is great and sometimes you can get bookings and sales from just sending out emails you can significantly increase your sales if you start picking up the phone and asking for the business. Up your sales activities this week and let me know how it goes.

Hi there,
I looked over your blog and it looks really good. Do you ever do link exchanges on your blog roll? If you do, I’d like to exchange links with you.
Let me know if you’re interested.
Thanks..
This is actually one of the more coherent, simplistic and accurate explanations of the differences between sales and marketing. Kudos.
Just reading through your post, it hit me that marketing encourages prospects to ask questions about your product, and selling encourages the seller to ask questions of the prospect. Spark the interest (marketing) and then fan the flame (sales).
Great blog – I’ll be coming back.
Your are Great. And so is your site! Awesome content. Good job guys! Interesting article, adding it to my favourites!
